VOTE!!! No Punchy Title Today. Just Vote!!!
Today, October 5, is the last day to register to vote in Texas for the November 3 election. If you are not registered by the end of today, you will not be able to vote in this one. That's it, that's the whole window.
I don't usually use this space for something this direct, but this one felt too important to soften. Voting is one of the most basic ways we get a say in the systems that shape our daily lives: our healthcare, our safety, our schools, our rights. Therapy can help you process how you feel about all of that. It can't cast a ballot for you.
Here's what's actually at stake on this ballot. Texas has a U.S. Senate seat up for grabs, and I will be voting for James Talarico. There's also a Governor's race, several U.S. House seats, state legislative seats, and right here in Bexar County: County Judge, District Attorney, county commissioner seats, judicial races, the Central Appraisal District board, and several local school board and school funding measures. Local races like these often get decided by a tiny number of votes, which means your ballot carries real weight.
I'll also say plainly where Source and Summit Therapy stands, because I don't think neutrality serves anyone right now. This practice is LGBTQ+ affirming. This practice supports immigrant communities and stands against ICE and its tactics. This practice is pro-choice. This practice supports common sense restrictions on guns. These aren't side issues to me, they show up in the room with my clients constantly, as real sources of fear, grief, and stress.
On that note, President Trump is holding a rally in San Antonio this Wednesday, October 7, at Freeman Coliseum (3201 E. Houston St.), with doors opening at 2:30 p.m. and remarks expected around 6 p.m. Two protests are planned nearby. The Bexar County Democratic Party is organizing a demonstration starting at 4:30 p.m. on Houston Street, across from Freeman Coliseum's parking lots 1 and 2. The San Antonio chapter of the Party for Socialism and Liberation is holding a separate demonstration starting at 5 p.m. at the intersection of Coca-Cola Place and Houston Street. If showing up matters to you, now you have the details. Protest times and locations can shift on short notice, so double check with the organizers before you head out: the Bexar County Democratic Party and San Antonio PSL chapter both post updates on their social media pages, and local outlets like the San Antonio Current and San Antonio Report tend to stay on top of any changes too.
But none of that matters if you're not registered. So here's what to do today:
Check your registration status and get registered through Powered by People (poweredxpeople.org) or Radical Registrars (radicalregistrars.org).
For San Antonio specific information, the League of Women Voters of San Antonio (lwvsa.org) publishes nonpartisan voter guides breaking down exactly who and what is on your ballot, available in both English and Spanish.
If you want to get more locally involved beyond this election, the San Antonio chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (sanantoniodsa.org) is also a resource worth knowing about.
Register today. Early voting runs October 19 through October 30, and Election Day is November 3. Vote on one of those days, whichever works for your schedule.
And if the current political climate is weighing on you, if you're noticing fear, anger, grief, or anything else coming up around all of this, that's worth paying attention to, not pushing past. Consider scheduling a session to process what's coming up for you. You don't have to carry it alone, and you don't have to have it all figured out before you reach out.
Your mental health and your community are both worth showing up for.
